Who is DFI?
The Washington State Department of Financial Institutions regulates and examines a variety of state chartered financial services. The Department also provides education and outreach to protect consumers from financial fraud.
Who is Money Savvy Generation?
The Money Savvy Generation Foundation is an independent curriculum publisher, specializing in financial literacy solutions. It produces highly-acclaimed, standards-based curricula to help teach children the skills of basic personal finance. (www.msgen.com)
Has this been done before?
Yes, during the 2004-2005 school year DFI piloted the Money Savvy program in 50 second grade classrooms across the state. Learn more about the 2004-2005 pilot project.
Based on positive teacher, student and parent response, that program was expanded to 70 second and third grade classrooms across the state for 2006/2007 school year.
How do parents feel about this initiative?
Survey results from the program pilot demonstrate parents’ support of putting this type of education in their children’s classrooms:
- 93% of parents feel that the Money Savvy Kids curriculum has increased their child’s knowledge and skills in an important subject area.
- 98% of parents feel that financial literacy is very relevant in their child’s future.
- 48% of parents said that the Money Savvy Kids curriculum would change how the adults in the household handled their money.
- 94% of parents support the idea of this program being expanded across the state.
