DFI's Commitment To Financial Education

Counting Money The Washington State Department of Financial Institutions (DFI) is a state agency that regulates and examines a variety of state chartered financial services.

DFI has always been committed to promoting and expanding financial education in Washington State. In 2007, financial literacy was put in DFI's charter with the passage of SB 6272.

DFI has a number of financial education and outreach programs that reaches all corners of Washington.

About Financial Education In Washington State

  • No School Requirements
    Washington currently does not require students to take a personal finance course to graduate. However, many schools across Washington are incorporating financial education into other subject areas.
  • 2008 Financial Literacy Work Group
    In 2008, Governor Chris Gregoire formed the Washington Financial Literacy Work Group. The group was tasked with identifying state funding, gaps and needs, and to make recommendations regarding improving financial education in Washington State.

  • Financial Literacy Public Private Partnership (FLPPP)
    The Financial Literacy Public Private Partnership (FLPPP) Committee was formed when the 2004 Washington State Legislature enacted SHB 2455. The Committee brings together individuals from both the public and private sector. FLPPP will focus on mechanisms for the distribution of financial literacy materials into the school system.

  • Washington Asset Building Coalition (WABC)
    The Washington Asset Building Coalition (WABC) came together in October 2006 to expand asset building across the state. Over 50 organizations are currently involved in the WABC. One of the primary goals of the WABC is to expand financial literacy opportunities and outcomes across the state.
